Burdette "Pud" Main

With sadness we announce the passing of Burdette “Pud” Main of Bremen. Pud went to be with the Lord on November 6, 2023. He passed peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by his family.

Pud was born on January 14, 1943, the only child of Marlin and Betty Rose (Kettinger) Main.

Pud shared his life with his love, Mary Jo. He was a well-known lifelong resident of Bremen. He lived a full life and enjoyed shooting pool, golfing, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

On several occasions he was asked how he received the nickname Pud. He fondly said his dad began calling him “pudgy” as a toddler and shortly thereafter it was shortened to Pud and it stuck.

Before his retirement he enjoyed working for the Bremen Parks Department. Pud could be seen riding a lawn mower during each summer season. He had a love for the outdoors, birds, and keeping the baseball fields in top shape for the games. He recounted proudly on occasion how his dad started the baseball league in Bremen. Pud maintaining the fields was his way of contributing to the program and adding to that legacy.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary and enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships he found there. His sense of humor will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his love of 34 years, Mary Jo Shumaker of Bremen.

He is survived by his four children, Curtis (Deb) Main of Wyatt, Scott Main of Edwardsburg, Brady (Cindy) Main of Bremen, and Brenna (Steve) Zbieranski of Bremen, seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren.

Throughout his life with Mary Jo, he also cared deeply for her three children, and is survived by Debi Hill of Bremen, Brian Shumaker of Bremen, and Amy Shumaker of Bremen, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at the Bremen VFW on Saturday, December 2. Friends are welcome from 4-7pm and dinner will be served.
